Environmental Management

Environmental Management

Denver International Airport has developed an Environmental Management System to reinforce environmental programs. The EMS outlines a series of guidelines, policies, procedures and processes that address environmental impacts in day-to-day business activities.

  Environmental Policy and Guidelines

The Department of Aviation, which operates Denver International Airport, is committed to protecting the airport's environment. The purpose of our environmental policy is to support the Department of Aviation's objectives, vision and mission;  to support the City of Denver's goals by participating in the city-wide initiative Greenprint Denver; and to safeguard and enhance the public’s investment in the airport.

The Environmental Services section at DIA has developed guidelines that address elements of the organization's activities, products or services that may affect the environment.

Pursuant to its environmental policy, DIA has many programs to protect the environment. Our system guide outlines environmental programs and the ways the airport community can help manage environmental issues while increasing operating efficiency.

  Recognition and Certification

Denver International Airport is the first international airport in the United States to have its Environmental Management System certified to the ISO 14001 international standard. This certification helps ensure that the airport's EMS contains the most recent internationally accepted practices and procedures for identifying and managing environmental impacts.

Additionally, the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment has acknowledged DIA as an environmental leader by accepting the airport as a Gold Member in the CDPHE Environmental Leadership Program. This elite program is limited to companies or organizations with excellent environmental records and with firm commitments to continual improvement and sustainability, as illustrated by their environmental management systems.

Denver International Airport applied to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for acceptance into the National Environmental Performance Track Program. In September 2006, the EPA accepted DIA, the only airport in the country to be so honored to date.
