COLORADO:
SEE THE NEW WEST LIKE A LOCAL
For first-time visitors and for those who call Colorado home, Denver International Airport is pleased to present a juried art exhibition, "Colorado: See the New West Like a Local." On display are 78 artworks and writings highlighting Colorado from the people who know Colorado best - the locals. Colorado residents with diverse viewpoints, interpretations and backgrounds submitted more than 300 original poems and statements expressing their vision of Colorado. Artists around the state interpreted the best of these submissions in many different media. A panel of respected members of the Denver art and business community made their recommendations to DIA after reviewing 697 artworks submitted by 407 artists. This exhibition showcases the collaborative efforts of many talented Coloradans, and will be seen by several million people during its display at the airport. DIA would like to thank the writers, poets and artists from all areas of the state who participated in DIA’s call for entries. The Jury: Sonnet Hanson - Master Teacher for Modern & Contemporary Art, Denver Art Museum; Pauline Herrera - Communications & Marketing Director, Denver Office of Cultural Affairs; Steve Klodt - Acting Director of Publications, DIA; Grant Pound - Executive Director, Colorado Art Ranch; Chris Ransick - Denver Poet Laureate CROSSROADS:
Colorado Architecture
Then, Now and Beyond
The exhibit celebrates Colorado’s rich architectural history and corresponds with National Architecture Week and the 150-year anniversary of the City of Denver. The exhibit will be open for viewing from March 2008 – January 2009 which includes DIA’s busy travel months and the Democratic National Convention. For 150 years, members of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) have worked with each other and their communities to create more valuable, healthy, secure, and sustainable buildings and cityscapes. AIA members have access to the right people, knowledge, and tools to create better design, and through such resources and access, they help clients and communities make their visions real. AIA Colorado (www.aiacolorado.org) is a state component of AIA with more than 2,200 members from four local chapters. Crossroads: Colorado Architecture Then, Now and Beyond can be found at two different locations: on A Concourse Gates, in the center core, mezzanine level; and on C Concourse Gates, in the center core, gates level (both locations accessible only to ticketed passengers). The DIA Art Exhibition Program provides a positive diversion from the pressures of traveling. There are several venues in the airport that feature changing exhibits. The main exhibition space is located on the connecting bridge between the Terminal on Level 6 and the security checkpoints leading to Concourse A. Shows change quarterly and include work by regional artists, folk art and crafts and topics dealing with history, transportation and cultural interests. A theme is developed for each exhibit from an artistic point of view and interpretation. The program collaborates with museums, cultural institutions and arts organizations to present the highest quality two- and three-dimensional work. The Denver International Airport Art Program is a joint venture between the Office of Art, Culture and Film and the Department of Aviation. |
