Zero Accidents — Our Destination

Welcome to the DEN Safety Program

At Denver International Airport (DEN), safety is our top priority. Every passenger, employee and partner relies on our commitment to creating a safe, efficient, and reliable airport environment.

To achieve this, DEN follows the FAA’s Part 139 Subpart E requirements, which set the standard for airfield inspections, condition reporting and overall safety management. These federal regulations, combined with our own Safety Management System (SMS), provide a structured framework to detect hazards, evaluate risks and implement proactive solutions that keep operations running safely and smoothly.

Through daily inspections, real-time airfield updates, continuous training and strong collaboration with our partners, DEN ensures that safety is built into everything we do.

Together, we share one destination: Zero Accidents.

What is an Airport Safety Management System (SMS) and Why It Matters

An Airport Safety Management System (SMS) is a proactive, structured approach to managing safety at the airport. It brings together policies, procedures, training and reporting tools to ensure that potential risks are identified, assessed and controlled before they can cause harm. SMS is not just about reacting to incidents—it is about preventing them through vigilance, accountability and continuous improvement.

For the public, this matters because SMS strengthens the safety net that protects every passenger, visitor, and worker at the airport. It ensures that aircraft operations are conducted in the safest possible environment, that hazards are reported and addressed quickly and that the airport is in full compliance with federal safety standards.

Ultimately, SMS enhances public confidence in air travel by ensuring that safety is always the top priority. It helps the airport deliver not only efficient operations, but also the peace of mind that travelers and their families deserve.

The Airport SMS: Our Blueprint for Safety

The Airport Safety Management System (SMS) serves as our blueprint for safety. Just as a blueprint guides the construction of a building, SMS provides the framework that ensures every aspect of airport operations is designed, monitored and continuously improved with safety at the core.

This blueprint aligns people, processes and technology under one purpose: identifying risks early, applying effective controls and fostering a culture where safety is everyone’s responsibility. By following this structured approach, we create a consistent standard that guides decision-making, training, daily operations and long-term planning.

For the public, this means confidence that their airport is not only meeting federal safety requirements but also going beyond them — committing to a future where safety drives every choice. SMS is more than a program; it is the foundation on which we build safe, reliable and trusted travel every day.

How DEN Ensures Airfield Safety

At Denver International Airport (DEN), daily airfield inspections are a cornerstone of our Safety Management System. Our trained airfield inspectors conduct thorough checks of pavement, lighting and markings to ensure they meet strict federal safety standards.

  • Pavement: We monitor runways, taxiways and aprons for cracks, debris or surface issues that could affect aircraft operations.
  • Lighting: We verify that all runway and taxiway lights are functioning properly, providing pilots with clear visual guidance, especially at night and in low visibility.
  • Markings: We confirm that painted lines, signs and symbols are bright, accurate and fully compliant with FAA requirements to guide safe aircraft and vehicle movement.

When inspectors find an issue, DEN takes immediate action to correct it, ensuring that even small problems are addressed before they can impact safety or disrupt operations. These inspections happen every day, in all conditions, keeping the airfield safe, reliable and ready for every takeoff and landing.

How DEN Safety Keeps the Airfield Safe

Emergency Drills at DEN

Denver International Airport (DEN) conducts regular emergency drills to ensure that our people, procedures and partners are always ready to respond effectively in the event of an emergency. These exercises bring together airport staff, airlines, first responders and federal agencies to practice coordinated responses to scenarios such as aircraft incidents, medical emergencies, severe weather or security events.

By simulating real-world conditions, emergency drills allow teams to test communication, evaluate response times and strengthen coordination across multiple agencies. Lessons learned from these drills are used to improve our plans, equipment, and training, ensuring continuous improvement.

For the traveling public, these exercises mean confidence that DEN is fully prepared to handle the unexpected — protecting passengers, crews and the airport community with a swift, professional and well-practiced response.

How DEN Provides Safety Updates

Denver International Airport (DEN) is committed to keeping our airline partners, tenants, and the traveling public informed through timely safety updates. These updates share important information about airfield conditions, construction impacts, operational changes and seasonal safety reminders.

We communicate through multiple channels—such as Notices to Air Missions (NOTAMs) for pilots, safety bulletins and briefings for employees and public messaging on our website and terminal displays. This ensures that the right information reaches the right audience quickly and accurately.

By providing clear, consistent updates, DEN helps everyone on the airfield and in the terminal stay aware of current conditions, reinforcing our highest priority: a safe, efficient and predictable airport environment.
