Airline Passenger Rights

  1. Flight delays and cancellations
    • Each airline has its own policies about what it will do for delayed passengers waiting at the airport; there are no federal requirements
    • Airlines are not required to compensate passengers whose flights are delayed or canceled
  2. Refunds
    • Consumers may be entitled to a refund of the airline ticket price and/or associated fees for a cancelled flight or a Schedule Change/Significant Delay
  3. Bumping of passengers from flights and the oversale of flights
    • When an oversale occurs, the Department of Transportation (DOT) requires airlines to ask people who aren’t in a hurry to give up their seats voluntarily, in exchange for compensation. Those passengers bumped against their will are, with a few exceptions, entitled to compensation.
  4. Lost, delayed, or damaged baggage
    • Airlines assert a limit on their liability for delayed, lost or damaged checked baggage. Liability differs on domestic and international trips.
    • Special liability requirements apply to the domestic transportation of assistive devices used by passengers with disabilities.
